How to deal with rejection

Sarah’s best joke: ‘A hamburger walks into a bar and the bartender says 'I’m sorry, we don’t serve food here’…

Here are FC’s top tips on how to deal with rejection:

1. Positivity is KEY!

Even if you’ve applied for an endless amount of jobs and they all say no, don’t give up! It’s important to look at every opportunity with a positive outlook and not let previous rejection hinder your chances of success in another role. Shake it off! :)

2. Take a step back and reflect

If you’re applying for a role you have no experience in and you are not receiving positive feedback then it’s time to take a step back and think about how you can change this! If you’re a graduate looking to enter the industry then think about enrolling in an internship or a course that can better your chances against other grads. If you are changing careers, you may need to think about revisiting your salary expectations!

3. Feedback

As well as your own personal constructive criticism, ask for feedback from the company you have been rejected from or recruiters you’ve worked with, often they will give you pointers of where you slipped up and how to improve!

4. Be selective

It’s important to know what you don’t want as well as what you do want –don’t apply to every Marketing Assistant or Sales Executive role out there as there are other factors that will come into play! With the market becoming more and more competitive, companies are looking for a 100% match between candidates and the role. Therefore, it is important you are genuinely interested in the company and the opportunity they are offering. Don’t rush into something that you aren’t sold on just because you feel like time is running out…

5. Persevere

Don’t give up! The right match is out there you just need to find it! This may take weeks/months/years (hopefully not) but it will happen; you’ll look back on rejected applications and see how those experiences shaped and bettered you to be the best, most successful version of yourself!
